But there was one righteous person, by the name of Chur, son of Miriam and nephew of Moshe, who took matters into his own hands. He was the one, together with his uncle Aharon, who not long ago held up Moshe’s hands during the war with evil Amalek, which helped win the war. Now he was ready to fight another battle, which in a sense will be a more difficult one – a fight against his fellow Jew.
Chur fearlessly tried to stop them from creating this idol. “How can you do this?! Chur shouted. “Didn’t we just all hear HaShem’s Commandment #2, ‘Lo yihiye lecha elohim acheirim’ – “You shall have no other gods? I’m warning you, STOP THIS NONSENSE!”
“Nonsense you call this?! The nerve of you!” they responded as they brutally killed Chur. “And let this be a lesson to anyone who stands in our way. We have a holy mission and we will succeed!”
HaShem saw Chur’s courageous act and was very impressed. As a reward, not much later, Chur’s young grandson, Betzalel, was chosen to be in charge of building the holy Mishkan, and Chur’s descendants would become great kings of Israel, including Dovid HaMelech, King David.
