My 4 for Your 4 – A Deal?

My 4 for Your 4 – A Deal?

“And you will celebrate before HaShem your G-d, you, your son, your daughter, your manservant, your maid, the Levi in your gates, the stranger, the orphan, and the widow… and you will be completely happy,” says the Torah regarding our Yom Tov celebrations.

Rashi’s words here are very powerful:

4 of mine (1. the Levi, 2. the convert, 3. the orphan, 4. the widow) correspond with 4 of yours (1. your son, 2. daughter, 3. servant, 4. Maidservant). YOU MAKE MINE HAPPY AND I WILL MAKE YOURS HAPPY!

Rashi on the Pasuk

HaShem is saying, “I have 4 groups of people who are so lonely and poor that they only rely on Me. So, if you bring joy to them, I will bring happiness to the people who depend on you.”

And there’s more!

The Posuk concludes, “Seven days shall you celebrate for HaShem… and be ONLY happy!” You can read these words like a command, that Hashem is instructing us to be happy during the Shalash Regalim.

Yet, along comes Rashi and tells us and tells us something completely different:

The simple explanation is that this is NOT a commandment… it’s a PROMISE!

Indeed, it’s simple! Simply put, true happiness comes from helping others. Try it – you’ll like it!
