After Yaakov blessed all his children, he said, “Please, make sure to bury me in Eretz Yisrael. It is my desire to be placed in Me’aras HaMachpailah – the burial place of my parents and their parents.”
Yaakov passed away when he was 147 years old. His children and grandchildren were very sad, especially Yosef who cried out loud and fell down in great sorrow. Even the Egyptians were devastated. They cried and mourned for 70 days! They all knew that Yaakov was a righteous person and due to his arrival in Egypt, tremendous blessings came upon the land. It was because of him that the great Nile River once again overflowed, causing the years of terrible hunger to come to an end.
Paraoh gave Yosef permission to bury Yaakov in Israel. A grand procession of Yaakov’s family, Egyptian noblemen, and kings from all over, escorted Yaakov’s coffin on the long journey to Me’aras HaMachpailah. The kings placed their royal crowns on top of Yaakov’s coffin as a sign of their great respect for him.
