INSIGHT: L’Chaim! To Life!

“Out of Danger” Korban – “I survived the desert!”

“Out of Danger” Korban – “I survived the desert!”

Shazak Scenario #4:

Mr. Shimon Shlepper started off on a long trip, but he lost his map…

“OOPS! I’m lost! I sure wish the GPS was invented!”

He made a wrong turn and ended up “schlepping” through the hot, dry Sinai desert, (and no air-conditioning), full of poisonous snakes and scorpions.

“I am so scared of reptiles that start with the letter S!”

Miraculously, Shimon Shlepper “shurvived”!

“I shurvived the hot, sweltering, boiling, scorching red-hot desert! Thank HaShem!”

Time for – you guessed it – a Korban Todah.

Shazak insight

L’Chaim! To Life!

During our Amidah prayer (a.k.a. Shemoneh Esray) we praise HaShem with the words, וכל החיים יודוך סלה, (ViChal HaChaim Yoducha Selah) meaning “And all life shall thank You forever.”

Now let’s see how each letter of the word, חיים, life, hints to the four types of people who have to give thanks to HaShem:

ח’ולה – The Choleh (sick patient) who recuperated from sickness.

י’ם – The traveler who successfully journeyed across the Yam (ocean).

י’וצא מבית אסורים – The prisoner who was Yotseh (freed) from jail.

מ’דבר – The survivor who crossed the dangerous Midbar (desert).

BTW: the last word סֶּלָה – Selah – is also the last word of Birchas HaGomel (see later)

מִי שֶׁגְּמַלְּךָ‏ כָּל טוּב, הוּא יִגְמָלְךָ כָּל טוּב סֶלָה
