On the 7th day of Sivan, the day following the Giving of the Torah, HaShem said to Moshe, “Come up to Me, on the mountain, and remain here for 40 days and 40 nights. I will give you the tablets of stone, on which the Ten Commandments are engraved.”
Moshe, together with his student Yehoshua, approached the mountain. Yehoshua pitched his tent and stayed there for the entire 40 days, awaiting Moshe’s return.
Meanwhile, Moshe climbed towards the top of the mountain which was covered by a thick cloud of smoke. HaShem made a wide path, which provided Moshe a clear, easy way to reach the top.
Moshe went right into the cloud… and HaShem gave him the 2 tablets engraved on stone.
Moshe stayed up on the mountain for 40 days and 40 nights, learning the entire Torah from start to finish! He was like an angel – not a morsel of food did he eat, nor a drop of water did he drink. He had the best study partner in the world – none other than the Master of the universe – HaShem.
