Chumash, Chameish, and Days of the Year

Chumash, Chameish, and Days of the Year

We have just concluded the book of Bereishis, the first of the 5 books of the Chumash. Chumash (חוּמָשׁ) is related to the Hebrew number Chamesh (חָמֵשׁ), meaning 5. And the numerical value of חוּמָשׁ is 354 (ח=8, ו=6, מ=40, ש=300), the exact number of days of the lunar year. Yes, when we count the days of the year following the moon, we get exactly 354! So the lesson is clear. It’s so very important to learn Chumash every day of the year… don’t even miss one day!

BTW: The Jewish monthly cycle – Tishrei, Cheshvan, Kisleiv, etc. – follows the lunar calendar (lunar=moon), and the secular calendar – Jan. Feb. March etc. – follows the solar calendar (solar=sun).
