INSIGHT: The Jewish Calendar

Day #1: Light Up the Darkness

Day #1: Light Up the Darkness

“Yehi ohr” – let there be light!

Before there was a world, everything was dark. On the first day, the very first thing HaShem created was light. HaShem called the light yom (“day”), and the dark lyla (“night”).

Vayehi erev, vayehi voker, yom echad – and it was evening, and it was morning – DAY #1.

The Jewish Calendar

“And it was evening, and it was morning”… First evening and then morning.

Unlike the calendar which you are used to, where a day begins and ends at midnight, the Jewish day is counted from nightfall until the next nightfall.

Now you know why Shabbos and Yom Tov (Jewish Holidays) always begin at night.
