Do you have a collection? Perhaps you collect stamps, stickers, or seashells?
Well, I did (that’s me… M.M.), going back many years ago in Chicago. I loved collecting coins from many different countries. Each Sunday without fail, I would take out the coins and count them carefully (unless, of course, it was Yom Tov). Although I already knew the exact amount of coins, I still counted them. I would hold them up, check the dates they were minted, examine the words in different languages, and admire their artwork.
Why? Didn’t I count them the week before, and the week before, and the week before, and the week before, etc. etc. etc.?
Simple… I just loved collecting coins! You never get tired of counting something that is truly very dear to you.
Similarly, HaShem loves His people and that’s why He wants to have them counted again and again. That’s why HaShem commanded to count Bnei Yisrael in Parshas Ki-Sisa, and again here in Parshas BaMidbar, and once again in Parshas Pinchas. HaShem never tires of counting His nation… that’s how dear we are to Him.
