INSIGHT: The Secret Code (keep it a secret)

Eliezer informed his hosts that he and Rivkah would leave immediately. Lavan and Rivkah’s mother, who was now in charge, disagreed.

“What, so fast?! Rivkah must stay for one year. Minimum 10 months,” they declared.

Eliezer responded, “Didn’t I hear you proclaim that HaShem is the One in charge? This is what He wants and we must not delay, not even a moment.”

Finally they decided to ask Rivkah herself. She answered short and to the point, “I will go now.”

Actually, she couldn’t wait to leave her house which was full of idols, and marry the great Tzaddik, Yitzchak. Off they went, towards the land of Cana’an, with one more passenger, Rivkah. Once again, the long, long trip miraculously took just a few hours.

The Secret Code (Shhhh… keep it a secret)

This “Search for the Perfect Wife” episode is here in Chapter 24 and it’s one of the longest chapters in the entire Torah. That’s a lot of Torah time devoted to one search: 67 verses!

Now, if you were Eliezer, how would you possibly know who was the right girl?

Eliezer actually made a deal with Hashem. When a girl would agree to give him water from her jug and then go ahead and give water to his thirsty camels (and camels sure know how to drink) he would know that she is “the one.”

And that’s exactly what happened.

Rivkah performed her kindness using a כַּד, which means “pitcher.”

Nothing in the world is by accident, including the fact that this adventure is found in chapter 24, which is written כ”ד or כַּד in Hebrew! (And you thought cod was a fish!).
