INSIGHT: 7 “Mems” and 7 “Mooms” – Watch Out!

Reward and Punishment

Reward and Punishment

Back to Moshe’s speech. “V’haya Im Sham’oah… If you keep all of the Mitzvos very carefully, HaShem will reward you by sending rain at the right time so that your plants and trees can grow. But watch out! Do not stray from the proper path and worship idols, or the outcome will not be good. No rain. No water!”

“Of course, rain is sooo important… without rain… no food… no water.”

“And without rain and water… we are kaput!

“Kaput?”

“Yes… Kaput… finished… done for… a total mess! All washed up.”

“Washed up? How are you washed up without water?!”

7 “Mems” and 7 “Mooms” – Watch Out!

“Do not stray from the proper path and worship idols, or the outcome will not be good. Not rain. No water!” Moshe had told Bnei Yisrael.

Now, look carefully at the original Hebrew version:

השמרו לכם פן יפתה לבבכם וסרתם ועבדתם אלהים אחרים והשתחויתם להם

You probably noticed that 7 words in a row end with a final Mem! But these 7 Mems are no coincidence, says Rabbi Yaakov ben Asher, known as the Tur. Mem sounds like the word “Moom,” which means a blemish or disability. Certainly, serving idols is a major blemish.

To make it even more interesting, look in Tehillim, where Dovid HaMelech (King David) lists 7 blemishes that all idols have. They cannot 1. Speak; 2. See; 3. Hear; 4. smell; 5. Feel; 6. Walk; or 7. discuss things sensibly.

Get it? Seven “Mems” and Seven “Mooms.”
